The city of Farmers Branch, in cooperation with the North Texas Tollway Authority and the Valwood Improvement Authority, presents the John F. Burke Nature Preserve, a 104-acre retreat for those who love to take a walk on the wild side!

The Preserve is the perfect place to study the great outdoors and is ideal for Boy Scout troops and other organized groups looking to take advantage of the park’s educational opportunities. Groups can walk through the scenic grounds or opt to explore the nightlife on an overnight adventure.

Located only 10 miles from DFW Airport, the preserve offers visitors the chance to experience seasonal wetlands and upland forests, as well as the creatures that thrive in both habitats. From native and migratory birds to indigenous plants, wildflowers, and other wildlife, this urban oasis lets you enjoy them all without leaving the city.

In 2023 the John F. Burke Nature Preserve underwent a renovation that added new amenities to the preserve including a crushed granite trail, two natural service trails, a boardwalk overlooking the pond, wildlife viewing points, and rest points.

Trails are wide sandy tracks, easy to traverse. The preserve is a cooperative effort between the city of Farmers Branch, the North Texas Tollway Authority, and the Valwood Improvement Authority. Parking and admission are free, and there are trash cans and a portable toilet in the parking area.

Enjoy this 2.6-km loop trail near Dallas, Texas. Generally considered an easy route, it takes an average of 29 min to complete. This trail is great for hiking and walking, and it’s unlikely you’ll encounter many other people while exploring.

This is a beautiful shaded trail that travels on the three available routes in John F. Burke Nature Preserve. There are beautiful views along the way including a spur trail that leads to the Elm Fork of Trinity River. Explore the upland forests and wetlands along the Elm Fork and observe the abundance of unique flora and fauna.
