White Rock Lake Park – Dallas, Texas

White Rock Lake is a reservoir located in northeast Dallas, Texas (United States). The lake was formed by damming White Rock Creek, which today widens into the lake before continuing south out of the spillway and emptying into the Trinity River. The lake covers 1,254 acres (5.07 km2) in the east Dallas community.

Construction of White Rock Lake commenced in 1910 in response to a water shortage in the City of Dallas. At the time, the mayor of Dallas promised to create a water source that would ensure the city would never run out of water.  Today, White Rock Lake is the largest urban lake in the United States, and at over 1,015 acres, White Rock Lake Park is twice the size of New York City’s Central Park. An oasis in the heart of the city, White Rock Lake Park is enjoyed by sports enthusiasts, picnickers, bird watchers, and walkers from all over the city and the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, as well as visitors from around the world.

White Rock Lake Park is home to 33 types of mammals, including squirrels, rabbits, skunks, raccoons, possums, bobcats, red foxes, and minks. There are 54 varieties of reptiles, including rattlesnakes, turtles, lizards, and horned toads. 20 kinds of amphibians call the park home including salamanders, toads, and frogs. There are more than 217 species of birds, including swans, pelicans, seagulls, loons, and all kinds of ducks. 19 kinds of fish swim in the waters of White Rock Lake, making it an angler’s paradise including bass, crappie, and catfish.
